Preserving Notre Dame through Virtual Reality

Preserving Notre Dame through Virtual Reality

With the cultural devastation of the fire Notre Dame being collectively processed, the global response has been surprisingly positive, with a focus on how to move forward.  Beyond charitable donations for the reconstruction, a movement has been growing around the concept of how to preserve other similar sites from unforeseen destruction.  Increasingly, the popular solution to preserve Notre Dame and other sites is with virtual reality.

The idea of virtual preservation & reconstruction of historic sites has been around for a few decades.  With the necessary technology to achieve this becoming affordable, demonstrable progress has been made in recent years.  And in the case of Notre Dame, this was achieved in 2014 by Ubisoft.

Through the development of Assassin’s Creed Unity, the team at Ubisoft painstakingly recreated the historic site to serve as a one of the main locations players can visit.  Through 3 A.M on April 25th, Ubisoft is inviting the world to explore Notre Dame with a free PC copy of Assassin’s Creed Unity. If you have a few minutes to spare, this is a highly recommended offer.

Update: While the promotional giveaway from Ubisoft is over, you can still purchase Assassin’s Creed Unity for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
