Fiber Optic Loss Budget Summary
Project Description: A quick diagnostic summary for fiber optic troubleshooting.

Lessons Learned: Clean design can eliminate needless troubleshooting. This was developed for a client’s work with terminating fiber optic cables. The previous method involved manually calculating the light loss values for each line – leaving the process open to errors that could compound. Working with them to transition to a formula based template with minimal data entry eliminated the errors and helped with presenting their clients an easier to understand summary of the fiber optic service needs.
Summit
Project Description: An alternative to Microsoft Project that allows for easy integration with reporting.

Lessons Learned: Custom solutions do not have to be expensive. As my workload for my clients and projects increased, I realized a project planning tool was needed to help keep everything on task. This became more apparent when overlapping schedules were creating several extremely over utilized days in a row. My initially thought was to use the common go to of Microsoft Project. The need for yet another license that would be met with a limited function compared to my larger needs persuaded me to search for other solutions. Most of the ones I came across that would mostly work all required monthly fees. Eventually, I decided to try to build a solution using Excel. With a little bit of patience, I was able to develop the prototype for Summit over the course of a weekend. The continuous use over the past year has made the planner stronger, with features being added as needs come up. Since first developing this, I have been able to largely avoid schedule conflicts and provide reliable turn around time estimates for my clients.
Absolute Clean Exteriors
Project Description: A clean, point of contact website for a local pressure washing company.
My Role: Web Developer/Designer
Tools Used: WordPress
Lessons Learned: Success can be determined with proper planning. This project drew heavily on my accumulated experience to develop a solid customer experience. From the initial discussions to the wireframes through the launch of the site, the execution of this project went well.
Mount Olive United Methodist Church
Project Description: Develop a website to easily share the community history of a small, rural church.
My Role: Web Developer/Designer
Tools Used: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
Lessons Learned: Hold thorough scope meetings before development begins to ensure the solution is a fit to the client’s need. With this, the client approached me to design a website with a few key features such as member activity updates, community history, and a schedule. The requests were met and the client was pleased but I found that the updates after the handoff became infrequent. In a followup meeting, I learned that there were some system and technical debts that prevented internal updates and the accessibility for the community members were met with challenges. This revelation lead to a shift from a website to manage updates to utilizing a page on Facebook. Since this change, participation among members of all age demographics has increased significantly – including bringing in new members from neighboring communities.
Dungeon Master
Project Description: A random dungeon generator
My Role: Programming & Design Developer
Tools Used: Microsoft Excel
Lessons Learned: Challenges & restrictions can lead to innovative solutions. This particular project came about after a night of board games with friends. One of the games had a board comprised of randomly selected tiles. The game was fun but the setup erred on the tedious side. The next day, while updating reports I had the idea of leveraging a random sort function against an array with conditional formats to draw the tiles. After a couple of trials, I was able to troubleshoot minor graphic issues and include a macro button to simplify the process.
Hex Realms
Project Description: A basic city building game.

Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Soundbooth, Construct 2, JavaScript
Lessons Learned: Mapping out branches will streamline increasingly complex systems. Hex Realms began as an idea build a simplistic city building game. As each phase of development completed, a level of natural feature creep was permitted to help make the experience more fulfilling. Initially, there were challenges with making sure everything aligned properly. However, the introduction of mapping out systems, loops, and states allowed for the project to quickly get back on track while resulting in a better end product.
The Impossibly Tall Forest
Project Description: A relaxing, yet challenging mobile game.

Lessons Learned: A/B Testing the audience can uncover new markets. When development for this game began, I developed it with publication in the Google Player Store in mind. A new feature of the development package I began using with this project was the ability to create HTML5 exports. That option allowed me to reach a wider range of markets and begin testing the receptiveness of each – resulting in better matching games with their optimal venues.
The Legend of Tiki Island
Project Description: A single player platformer game with levels spanning across a tropical island.

Tools Used: GameMaker Studio, 3D Studio Max, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Soundbooth, Camtasia
Lessons Learned: When developing for a system, a vital aspect to consider is compatibility for approaching hardware, software, and interface changes. This particular project was developed over the course of several years for Windows 7 using software that was not fully compatible with Windows 10. While the asset library could be leveraged, the engine and custom code was tied to the former operating system – meaning the game had to be built from the ground up to complete the port.
